Buy Golly! A History of Black Collectables
AVailable 19th April 2005

Author Clinton Derricks is an authority on golliwog dolls and an avid collector. He is also black. His collecting has brought him double-edged fascination with both the history of an important 19th and 20th century toy, and also the different messages that this toy and its representations carry. Many view golliwogs as an important segment of black social history in the western world; others find that these images are similar to certain African works of art. It may be closer to the truth, however, to say that certain social environments have caused a negative image of blacks to be perpetrated, whether in books such as Little Black Sambo, or advertising and entertainment.
